Extended Abstract
In today’s modern age, technology has profoundly impacted our lives, making us heavily reliant on it. The progress of information and technology media has been felt by almost all levels of society, both in terms of positive and negative from its use. With the help of these gadgets, students can study independently and advance themselves. These gadgets play a crucial role in making students active and contributing to their all-round development. This study aims to make students aware of the positive and negative effects of digital gadgets on them. In preparing this article, different articles have been read on this topic. Therefore, this is a descriptive study. As a result of this research, the positive and negative aspects are highlighted. While students use these gadgets to introvert themselves, the negative effects can also cause students to distracted from studies. By analyzing these negative aspects, school teachers should be aware of how to help students use digital gadgets effectively, providing a better lifestyle and guiding them towards a better life strategy. Our school teachers should be educated about these challenges and make them to use of digital gadgets with the aim of ensuring that students do not forget the importance of Vedic education even in this technological age.
1. Introduction
In today’s modern society, the use of digital gadgets and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has increased exponentially due to the technological revolution. We can utilize digital technology through various digital gadgets such as mobile telephones, laptops, computers, and other devices. As a result, the lifestyle of human society has undergone a significant transformation. Currently, students and the general public are heavily reliant on these digital tools. These gadgets are no longer just means of communication but have become essential daily necessities. Students utilize them for educational purposes, while the general public uses them for daily work activities. We cannot envision completing daily tasks without these gadgets. By utilizing these gadgets, students can effortlessly access their daily learning needs. Students can learn from instructors worldwide through live video and audio sessions. Moreover, they can easily access any topic from foreign publications, eliminating the need to physically go elsewhere. They can enjoy all these facilities from the comfort of their own homes. Beyond traditional education subjects, students can explore various topics that were previously inaccessible. Here, students not only develop intellectually but also have opportunities for overall development. As a result, they can achieve not only excellent academic results but also enhance their personal learning if they utilize these digital gadgets effectively. However, there are many students who misuse these digital gadgets. With the help of these devices, they get entangled face book, social media, funny videos, Instagram, and other social media platforms. They become trapped and ignore their learning subjects. Such students are cursed rather than blessed by these digital gadgets. These gadgets have both positive and negative impacts on students. Moreover, excessive use of these digital gadgets has negative effects on students, resulting in physical and mental harm, as well as visual impairment. On one hand, students can improve themselves, while on the other hand, they can demotivate themselves. It totally depends on how students utilize digital gadgets.
1.1 Objectives of the Study
The purpose of this research paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the perspectives of teachers, students, and parents regarding digital gadgets, highlighting both their advantages and disadvantages. This aims to empower them to mitigate the negative effects and utilize these digital tools for positive purposes, encourage them to use these gadgets honestly and effectively in all aspects of their work. Additionally, leveraging these gadgets can foster the development of one’s creative abilities.
2. Methodology of the Study
To prepare this research paper, primary and secondary data both have been used. Own thoughts and experiences served as primary data, while various previous research papers constituted secondary data, providing valuable insights to support my arguments. This research paper type as a qualitative approach, thereby adopting a descriptive research methodology.
3. Results and Discussion
The Positive Influence of Digital Gadgets on Students:
- Qualitative Education: Digital gadgets have positively impacted students in various ways. With easy access to educational content, students can build deep concepts and knowledge, leading to improved academic performance and reduced dropout rates.
- Interest: Students are enthusiastic about using digital gadgets because they can utilize them according to their needs, making learning more engaging and enjoyable.
- Learning Resources: Digital gadgets provide students with easy access to diverse learning materials, including educational videos, audio content, digital books, and more. This enables them to quickly access the content they need.
- Enjoyable and Motivated Learning: Digital gadgets offer various educational videos, making learning fun and interactive. This increases students’ interest and focus on learning.
- Overcoming Academic Problems: If students face academic challenges, digital gadgets can help them easily find solutions, facilitating a better understanding of complex concepts.
- Advanced Learning: Digital gadgets enable students to learn beyond their syllabus, exploring new topics and subjects. If teachers are unable to cover a topic due to time constraints, students can still learn it through digital means.
- Improved Learning Outcomes: By providing quality education, digital gadgets can enhance learning outcomes. With better learning programs, students can improve academically and professionally, achieving superior results.”
- Data analysis: Gadgets help teachers track student progress, identify knowledge gaps, and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Increased Accessibility: Gadgets make learning accessible to students with disabilities, remote or rural students, and those with conflicting schedules.
Negative Effects of Gadget Usage:
- Negative Effects on Health: Excessive gadget use causes health damage, including weakness from prolonged sitting, eye strain, ear problems, and mental health issues (Aldimasi et al., 2018).
- Mental Stress: Students’ focus on gadgets increases mental stress due to the lack of physical activity, leading to depression in some cases.
- Social Isolation: Spending too much time on gadgets leads to increased social isolation, decreased student interaction, and disengagement from society.
- Disconnection from the Natural Environment: Children’s excessive social media use disconnects them from nature, hindering their ability to appreciate and contribute to the environment (Firmansyah et al., 2023).
- Loss of Self-Control: Students’ excitement about gadgets decreases self-control, as they get distracted by notifications and indulge in non-educational content (Zain et al., 2022).
- Cyber bullying: Indirect involvement in society through gadgets makes students vulnerable to cyber bullying through social media comments, leading to mental distress.
- Lack of Practical Skills: Overuse of gadgets results in a lack of practical skills, such as handwriting, counting, and spatial awareness (Tambunan & Batubara, 2020).
- Dependence on Technology: Gadgets create dependence on technology, inhibiting independent thinking and learning, and making students reliant on technology.
- Neglect of Vedic Education: The modern focus on gadgets neglects the traditional Vedic education goal of attaining Absolute Consciousness, manifesting spiritual and moral strength in individuals.
- Effect on verbal communication: Toronto, Canada found that children who play with gadgets for an additional 30 min each time could face the risk of speech delay by 49%.
3.1 Role of the Teacher to Use Gadgets
If a school teacher conducts a special class on the proper use of digital tools, provides proper guidance to the students, and demonstrates how to avoid misusing digital gadgets, the students will benefit greatly. Through these special classes, students will understand where they are going wrong in any field and will be able to overcome their own mistakes by recognizing their errors. By learning the proper use of digital gadgets from their teachers, students can improve their studies and develop themselves in various fields of education with the help of ICT and digital tools. Since students are mostly directly involved with the school, teachers should be aware of these positive and negative factors so that they can do their best to protect students from negative influences.
3.2 Significance of the Study
The significance of this article lies in examining the effects of using digital gadgets or technology, and raising awareness among teachers, students, and school administration. Students are becoming detached from Vedic practices, losing control over their daily lives, and disconnecting from society. By analyzing these negative aspects, school teachers should be aware of how to help students use digital gadgets effectively, providing a better lifestyle and guiding them towards a better life strategy. Student Awareness: Students should be aware of how these gadgets impact their lives and use them judiciously, aligning with their individual needs or educational requirements. Teacher Awareness: Teachers should be aware of the positive and negative effects of using digital gadgets and provide guidance to students on their effective use, leading to better student outcomes. Administration Awareness: The school administration should present these topics through extra classes, ensuring that every teacher informs and monitors the negative effects of using digital gadgets, enabling students to use them responsibly.
4. Conclusion
In conclusion, technology and digital gadgets make tasks easier in our lives and students’ lives. This article highlights that student can study with the help of these gadgets, access information quickly, and solve problems easily. However, it’s essential to acknowledge the negative aspects of using these gadgets, as they can have adverse effects on students and neglect negative effect. Teachers and guardians should be aware of these risks to advise students on responsible gadget use, promoting healthy academic habits and overall development. As Gandhiji said, A healthy body develops a healthy mind, and a healthy mind fosters healthy education. Therefore, education should prioritize students’ well-being by protecting them from negative influences, enabling them to thrive academically and beyond.
